In the heart of Santiago de Compostela, where the majestic and imposing cathedral stands, lies a hidden treasure that holds a fascinating history. The Parroquia da Nosa Senhora a Antiga da Corticelaoften overshadowed, is an architectural jewel that deserves to be discovered and has witnessed centuries of history.
It began its existence as a modest chapel in the 9th century, during the reign of Alfonso III. Initially, it was dedicated to St. Stephen and had two additional altars, dedicated to St. Sylvester and St. Columba. Later, it belonged to the Benedictines of San Martiño Pinario.
Its design follows the scheme of the basilica of Alfonso III, but with wider proportions. Throughout the years, it underwent different modifications that gave rise to its current appearance. During the baroque period, additions and alterations were made that gave it an ornate touch and it was integrated with its neighbor, the Cathedral of Santiago.
It is accessed through the north arm of the transept, through a passageway built in the 18th century, where the chapel of San Nicolás used to be.
Its façade presents an impressive entrance, where two semicircular arches frame a tympanum that exhibits the representation of the Epiphany. This sculptural masterpiece, attributed to the workshop of Mateo, shows the Magi adoring the Christ Child and has been a source of inspiration for other works of art in religion.
Inside, you can find semicircular arches and Gothic tombs dating from different historical periods, providing a unique view of the artistic evolution over the centuries.
The parish church houses several artistic treasures. Among them, there is a stola slab dating from the 7th century, a baptismal font adorned with 15th century bronzes, a 17th century recumbent Christ and the venerated image of the Virgin of Consolation, especially adored by the students of Santiago. Each object has its own history and contributes to the richness of this sacred space.
The Parroquia da Nosa Señora a Antiga da Corticela, although less known than the cathedral of which it is a part, is an architectural and artistic treasure that captivates those who discover it. Unlike other chapels in the building, it has its own pastor and Mass schedule. These are held every day at 11:00 am.
