The Conxo neighborhood of Compostela is getting ready to celebrate the fifth edition of the Festa do Banquete de Conxo, from May 24 to 26. These festivities commemorate the fraternization banquet that took place in 1856 between people of different social classes as a symbol of respect.
During the presentation of the program of the event, Goretti Sanmartín, mayor of the City Council of Santiago, pointed out that “it will be a celebration of fraternity, freedom and equality; values that symbolize that historical act of the Banquete de Conxo that gathered students and artisans in the old Carballeira in the 19th century”. He took the opportunity to encourage the entire community to join the parade. and “to bring food to share in this pilgrimage, where there will also be a pulperia for those who wish to shop there, and to participate in this celebration with workshops, music, theater and photography to create community as evoked by that event of 1856”.
One of the great novelties of this year’s edition is the I Photographic Contest of the Banquet of Conxo, which seeks to promote creativity and highlight the value of this celebration through photography. All interested parties may submit their images from May 27 to 31. The winners will win various gifts, such as a sports camera, a camera or photography books.

Day-by-day programming
The celebration of the Conxo Banquet will begin on Friday, May 24 with ‘As voces do bosque‘, a literary tour through the Carballeira de Conxo and guided by the editor and writer Quique Alvarellos. It will remember the authors who wrote about the forest or in it, from the twelfth to the twentieth century. It will leave at 17:30 hours in the Church of Conxo, to participate you must send an email to rutabanquete@santiagodecompostela.gal.
From 18:30 hours, the square of Conxo will host a traditional dance workshop taught by the Cultural Association Pena Maior de Marrozos. The Muiñeiros do Sarela will perform a tavern songs workshop at 7:30 p.m. at the Aurelio Aguirre Sociocultural Center. In addition, there will be live tavern singing in the neighborhood bars from 9 pm.
There will also be an ‘escape room‘ at 7 p.m. in the surroundings of the carballeira, so that the little ones can enjoy the celebrations.
On Saturday, May 25 at 11 a.m. the Festa do Banquete Orienteering Race will take place, a non-competitive event with options and categories for all ages and levels. It will run through the grounds of the forest. If you want to compete, you can register by clicking here.
On the same day, the Aurelio Aguirre square will host a vermouth session from 1 p.m. enlivened by the group Boa Sunet. In the afternoon, at 7 p.m., the steps of the Conxo Psychiatric Hospital will witness the ‘Canto Fraterno‘, in which several choirs of the city will participate.
The big day of the festivities
The main day of the V Festa do Banquete de Conxo will be Sunday 26 and will begin with the parade ‘Alá van os estudantes e artesáns’, which will start from the praza do Toural and will go through the streets of Santiago until it reaches the neighborhood. Afterwards, the procession will go to the Carballeira de Conxo, where there will be a theatrical representation of the Banquete de Conxo, a meal and a popular pilgrimage in which the neighbors will dress up in period costumes.
At 12:45 pm will be the turn of the opening speech by María Luísa López Otero. During the afternoon, at 5 p.m., the ‘Serán da fraternidade‘ will be held, a traditional foliada that will be full of music and dance. The festivities will end with the closing speech by filmmaker Jaione Camborda and the concert by O Sonoro Maxín, at 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm, respectively.

The traditional Book Market returns
In addition to all these activities, the Conxo Banquet will hold its usual Book Market, which will take place in the praza Aurelio Aguirre on Saturday and Sunday. It will have 16 stands of bookstores, publishers and sectors related to the book, five more than in the last edition. It will be complemented by a small exhibition of traditional crafts, such as pottery and basketry.
During the afternoon of Saturday other events will take place in parallelas the round table ‘Books, mind and healthin the cloister of the Psychiatric Hospital of Conxo; the performance of the company N+1 circus, theater and dance performances in the central square of Conxo; or the Poetry Festival in Aurelio Aguirre square.
