The Xornadas de Música Contemporánea come to Compostela from June 5 to 20

3 Jun 2024 | Culture, Leisure

The avant-garde music of the 20th and 21st centuries takes Santiago de Compostela by the hand of a new edition of the Xornadas de Música Contemporánea, from June 5 to 20. Under the slogan ‘Kaleidoscope’, they will offer a modern and varied artistic proposal with seven concerts and a live dance show.

The Auditorio de Galicia, the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo (CGAC) and the Teatro Principal will be the venues for the event, in which the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE), the Ensemble Liberdade, the Banda Municipal de Música de Santiago de Compostela and the dance company Lookatthingsdifferent will participate.

Santiago, JONDE’s meeting point

The National Youth Orchestra of Spain has once again chosen the Galician capital to host its annual meeting, from May 31 to June 4. Thus, the JONDE will turn the Auditorio de Galicia into the center of its artistic and educational activity, focused on the study and preparation of the symphonic and chamber repertoire. During this time, they will prepare two recitals, led by the German Ensemble Modern and under the direction of Pablo Rus, which will be presented in concert on June 5 and 9 at 8:30 pm.

They will also work on three chamber projects under the tutelage of Trio Arbós and clarinetist Joan Enric Lluna, which will be offered on June 6, 7 and 8 at 8:30 pm.

This program will include an important sample of the contemporary musical creation of the last years of the 20th century and the first years of the 21st century. A total of 22 works will be performed in these five concerts, including 6 premieres.

All these performances will be free of charge until full capacity is reached.

A kaleidoscope of avant-garde sound

The Ensemble Liberdade will also participate in the Xornadas de Música Contemporánea. The guerrilla formation of the Orquesta Galega de Liberdade will offer a concert on Wednesday, June 12 at 8:30 pm at the CGAC.

On Tuesday, June 18, also at 8:30 p.m., but at the Teatro Principal, the dance company Lookatthingsdifferent will present SOMOS, a delicate and physically demanding work that seeks to blur gender roles and stereotypes to the sound of original music by Nico Casal.

The Municipal Band of Santiago will put the finishing touch to these days. The last concert of the edition will take place on Thursday, June 20 at 8 p.m. at the Teatro Principal and admission will be free.
