The ideal river beach to refresh yourself near Compostela

6 Aug 2024 | Leisure, Tourism

The heat has settled in Galicia and there is nothing better to combat it than a good dip.
Despite not being on the coast, Santiago de Compostela has a privileged position, as it is close to a large number of river beaches where you can enjoy the summer.
Today we talk about ‘A Praíña’, a river beach near the capital where you can cool off.
This location is 16 kilometers from Compostela, on the river Ulla and next to the medieval bridge of Pontevea, on the border between the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña. A Praíña is a natural environment with very complete facilities for the enjoyment of bathers.
The river bank is shallow, perfect for people of all ages to cool off and combat the high temperatures.

It has a large parking area, so it is ideal for driving from Santiago, either to spend the day or for a getaway after work.
It also has tables and picnic areas for picnics or meals, a rental service for kayaks and paddle surf boards and even an area for motorhomes.
In addition, the association Entre As Pontes, in charge of managing this place, promotes events such as concerts, trails or parties.
The fastest route to get to A Praíña is via the Santiago de Compostela – A Estrada highway (AG-59). Near Santiago there are other similar sites, such as the river beach of Chaián, located ten kilometers from the town center.
It has many shaded areas, picnic areas, a cafeteria and even a refuge for fishermen.
Another popular riverbank is Tapia beach, which is 15 kilometers from Compostela on the banks of the Tambre River.
This place is a recreational area with very complete facilities.
It has a beach bar, a lifeguard post and even a swimming pool for children up to 10 years old where they can play and swim safely.

O Refuxio beach is another good option.
It is located on a river island and has plenty of shade for shelter in the hottest hours.
Finally, mention the beach of A Tarroeira, which is equipped with several bathing areas, a playground and a well-known hiking trail, the Botanical Path of the Mera River.
If you are going to spend the summer in Santiago de Compostela, we encourage you to visit any of these sites to enjoy the high temperatures to the maximum.
And remember that, if you prefer the coast, you can go to beaches such as Aguieira, Cabío-Lombiña or Coroso.
