The Centro de Artes Dixitais de Galicia at the Cidade da Cultura will be ready in 2025 with a tender budget of 4.5 million euros. It will be located in a disused subway space that was originally to be the parking lot of the Teatro de la Música, with a surface area of 4,400 square meters.
Work on the Teatro de la Música, which was part of the original plan for the Cidade da Cultura, began in 2005 and was suspended in 2011. Now, twelve years later, the disused subway space of that infrastructure in the surroundings of Mount Gaiás, will find a new purpose, as it will become the Digital Arts Center of Galicia. The bidding budget is 4.5 million euros, distributed in several annual installments, and it is expected that this amount will be reduced during the contract award process.
The Xunta de Galicia has launched the tender for this equipment, which aims to become “a reference in this type of technology”, according to the secretary general of culture of the Galician government, Anxo M. Lorenzo. During the presentation made yesterday in Santiago, it was emphasized that the adaptation works of these spaces will not affect the normal operation of the institutions located in the Gaiás nor the activities carried out there. In addition, it was assured that the future center in this subway space will not alter or interfere with the unique architectural value of the complex.
The Centro de Artes Dixitais is shaping up to be an extraordinary leap in the modernization of the Galician cultural sector and is expected to play an active role in the digitization strategy of culture. Work is expected to begin in the fall, with the goal of being fully operational by the end of 2025. The center will feature state-of-the-art technology to offer immersive experiences, virtual and augmented reality, as well as videomapping areas for large-format artistic interventions. There will also be creative laboratories, training spaces and collaboration with private companies and academic institutions.
The connection with the digitization strategy of Galician culture and the preservation and dissemination of tangible and intangible heritage are key aspects of this project. It is expected that the Centro de Artes Dixitais will become an exhibition and experimentation space of reference in Spain, hosting artistic projects developed from digital arts.
