Santiago de Compostela hosts an ecological ice rink

2 Jan 2024 | Leisure

Santiago de Compostela has welcomed ‘Alameda en Xogo‘, a program of Christmas activities promoted by the City Council to liven up the holidays for citizens. As its name suggests, the Alameda is the focal point of this initiative and hosts one of the most attractive attractions of this season: a completely free ecological ice rink.

It is a skating space that occupies an area of 100 m² and has the capacity to accommodate up to 25 people in each session. The most surprising thing is its sustainable nature, as the ice it uses is different from what we are used to. The fact is that its operation does not depend on water or electricity, which not only helps to reduce costs, but also to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The magic formula behind this innovative track consists of liquid glide, plastic powder and various additives. In addition, maintenance is only a fraction of the cost of maintaining a conventional ice rink.

This more efficient approach is environmentally friendly and promises an accessible skating experience for all Santiago residents, with free access. Falls are also more bearable because the material used is much softer than natural ice, which provides an additional element of safety.

The Alameda is filled with fun and games

Apart from the track, the Alameda compostelana hosts another series of activities as part of ‘Alameda en Xogo’ so that the compostelanos can have fun in this festive season. Thus, in a large tent, it offers different pastimes such as a climbing wall, a ball pool and various games, such as a duck fishing game and another in which you learn how to milk a cow.

The opening hours of the activities of ‘Alameda en Xogo’, including the ice rink, is from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm.except on December 31, when they are only open in the morning, and on January 1 and 6, when they are closed for public holidays.
