The
Church of Santo Antonio de Fontiñas
is one of the most recent temples of Santiago de Compostela. It was built in 2007, after several years of construction, and inaugurated by the mayor of the city at that time, Xosé Sánchez Bugallo.
The temple is located in the neighborhood of Fontiñas, the youngest of the city. Although in its beginnings it only had a couple of population centers, over the years and after the construction of Área Central, it became one of the most populated areas of the Galician capital.
For this reason, due to the growing increase in the number of inhabitants, the parish of Fontiñas was created in 1994. In 2005, work began on what is now the church. Its inauguration was a great event, attended by the faithful of the community, the City Council of Santiago and the Archbishop of Compostela, Monsignor Julián Barrio.
The complex was designed by the architect from Orense, Iago Seara. He was the Head of the Department of Architecture of the Department of Culture of the Xunta de Galicia and currently works as a professor at the School of Architecture of the University of A Coruña. Among his works, the rehabilitation of the Monastery of San Martiño Pinario and the restoration of the facades of the convent of San Paio de Antealtares stand out.
Nor can we forget the patron saint of this church, San Antonio. He was an outstanding Franciscan friar and theologian. He entered the Franciscan Order in his youth and stood out for his profound knowledge of the Bible and his eloquence in preaching. His sermons were so inspiring that they attracted crowds of people seeking to hear his message of love and salvation.
Numerous miracles are attributed to him, such as the ability to speak in languages he had not studied, the ability to cure diseases and the ability to find lost objects. In fact, it is commonly invoked when a person is looking for an object and does not know where it is.
She is often depicted with the Child Jesus in her arms, as it is said that he appeared to her in a vision while she was praying and entrusted her with the task of caring for him. This representation symbolizes the love of Saint Anthony for the young Nazarene.
The figure of this saint has transcended time and continues to be a model of faith, charity and humility for Catholics and for the parishioners of the Church of Santo Antonio das Fontiñas, who worship him.
The temple celebrates mass every day of the week. Specifically, from Monday to Saturday at 19:30, on Sundays and holidays at 10:00 and 12:00 and on the eve of holidays at 19:30.
