The Santiago-Rosalia de Castro Airport is located about ten kilometers northeast of the city. It is the access point for many travelers to the Galician capital and the community in general, as well as the last place pilgrims visit on their way.
Its history begins in 1932, when a group of aeronautics enthusiasts decided to found an aeroclub in Santiago de Compostela, more specifically in the municipality of Lavacolla. It started with three landing areas, but with the passing of the years and several works, in 1947 it was opened to national and international civilian traffic, although it was still far from becoming what it is today.
Over the course of time, it expanded and added different terminals. In 2011, the Ministry of Public Works commissioned a new infrastructure, improving the quality of airport services. This new terminal, together with a new parking lot, access roads and control tower, serves hundreds of passengers every day, offering the best guarantees of safety, quality and service.
In 2020 it was renamed Santiago-Rosalía de Castro to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the most representative writer of the Galician language.
There is a city bus line, 6A, to go from Santiago de Compostela to the airport, leaving from the Intermodal station.
