San Xoán Apóstolo Church

The
Church of San Xoán Apóstolo
located in the neighborhood of Vite and in front of the faculties of the North Campus of the University of Santiago de Compostela, is an outstanding example of the contemporary architecture of the city. This parish complex, dedicated to San Xoan, was designed to meet the spiritual needs of the growing local population.

What characterizes this temple is its marked contemporary character, reflected in its unique architectural design. The building is highlighted by an imposing concrete canopy that gives it personality and functionality. With its sharp shape, it delimits and organizes the access space to the complex, providing a singular and welcoming entrance.

Under the concrete slab of the canopy are the entrances to the different spaces dedicated to worship and the parish facilities, providing a practical and efficient distribution.

One of the most notable features of the Church of San Xoán Apóstolo is its bell tower, which rises majestically in the urban landscape. The base of the tower is defined by two concrete walls, while its metal structure becomes visually lighter as it rises.

This metal finial gives it a modern and distinctive look, adding great visual interest to the composition of the complex.

As for its internal layout, the Church of San Xoán has been designed with functionality in mind. The main space of the church is located in the center, flanked by the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and various parochial dependencies. This organization allows natural light to enter different areas, creating interesting visual effects and providing a welcoming environment for worshippers and visitors.

It is important to mention the close relationship that the temple establishes with its illustrious neighbor, the building of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, designed by the famed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, which won the Secil architecture prize.

Both buildings share a minimalist and modern aesthetic, with white walls and slightly curved roofs. This physical proximity generates an interesting and harmonious dialogue between them, in which they complement and enrich each other.

As for masses, the Church of San Xoán Apóstolo celebrates them from Monday to Saturday at 20:00, Sundays and holidays at 12:00 and the eves of holidays at 20:00. Anyone who wants to witness the beauty of this building can visit it and enjoy these religious rites.
