The
Church of San Miguel dos Agros
is located in the vicinity of the Monastery of San Martiño Pinario, specifically in the Praza de San Miguel.
The building was erected over a temple from the time of Archbishop Xelmirez, dating from the 12th century, and the records highlight the fervor of its parishioners for the legends and stories of the Camino de Santiago.
Of neoclassical style, the church was built at the end of the 18th century and completed in 1823. The façade is the work of Melchor de Prado y Mariño.
Regarding the structure of the building, it has a rectangular floor plan, with granite masonry walls and tile roof.
The characteristics of the façade include the typical elements of the classicist style, which are present in most of the neoclassical buildings in the old part of the city.
Thus, it has four Ionic fluted pilasters supporting an entablature and framing the façade presided by a large oculus, a triangular pediment and two small side towers as bell towers.
Inside you can contemplate the Chapel of Sorrows or ‘Chapel of the Executed’, where the condemned to die on the gallows prayed and where their corpses were deposited before burial.
Although the building does not stand out for its special artistic value, compared to other temples of similar style in the city, the Church of San Miguel dos Agros preserves some elements of great patrimonial interest.
One of them is a tombstone from the 14th century, which is located in the wall of the first chapel of this church in Santiago de Compostela. The tombstone is dated 1374 and refers to the foundation of the chapel of San Isidro by Domingo Eanes and his wife, María Fernández.
Also noteworthy is the Gothic style chapel, adjacent to the aforementioned chapel, which stands out for its predominant ribbed vault. Although it does not have visiting hours for the public, the Church of San Miguel dos Arcos is open for regular worship with rosary, every day of the week.
