San Caetano Church

The Church of San Caetano was founded by Captain Bartolomé de Verea y Vázquez and his wife Doña Ángela de Cora y Ponte y Andrade in 1701 and is a small architectural jewel in the city. In contrast to the baroque style that predominated at the time of its construction, this temple stands out for its sober elegance and its marked influence of popular Galician architecture.

The design of the temple has a Latin cross plan with a straight chevet and a prominent transept in the elevation. The latter rises above the level of the gable roof that covers the main nave, creating an impressive visual effect. The walls of the building are plastered, except for the central street of the main façade and the tops of the openings, where the beautiful granite masonry can be appreciated.

Its main facade is characterized by simplicity and elegance. A doorway with a semicircular arch welcomes visitors. Above it, there is a rectangular window that shows the arms of the founders, extolling their legacy and contribution to the construction of the tempo.

The highlight is the impressive rectangular belfry. The belfry has two semicircular arches flanked by pilasters, supporting a triangular pediment topped with pinnacles. This detail adds a touch of grandeur and beauty to the whole.

But, beyond its architecture, the church is known for its devotion to its patron saint, San Caetano. This 16th century Italian saint was an exemplary priest who dedicated his life to the service of others and to ecclesiastical reform.

He came from a noble family and received a privileged education. However, she decided to renounce her privileges to dedicate herself completely to religious life.

St. Caetan was noted for his commitment to the poor and most needy, founding the Order of Clerics Regular, also known as the Theatines, to provide them with spiritual and material assistance.

The saint was a model of charity, humility and dedication to the faith. His example continues to inspire the faithful throughout the world and he is revered as the patron saint of the unemployed and job seekers.
