Mount Pedroso

Monte Pedroso
is one of the most emblematic places of the city of Santiago de Compostela. It has a height of about 460 meters and is located three kilometers from the Galician capital. This point stands as the ideal spot to contemplate the city and the majestic Cathedral of Santiago, especially at sunset.

It is protected from construction to preserve the visibility of the Apostle’s basilica. From its summit, visitors can enjoy an unparalleled panoramic view of Santiago. On the horizon, the Pico Sacro and the Cidade da Cultura stand out.

At the top of the hill is the Monument to the Cross, built in 1900 by order of Cardinal Martin de Herrera. This cross was erected following a proposal of Pope Leo XIII, who suggested the construction of crosses visible from the surroundings so that people could cross themselves when leaving their homes. It is said that praying in front of this statue granted 300 days of indulgence.

To reach the top, there is a Way of the Cross that runs along the site, inaugurated in 1909 by popular subscription and with the presence of the Cardinal. The route starts at Ponte Asén, passes through Casas Novas and climbs to the top.

Mount Pedroso is linked to the history of St. Francis of Assisi. Legend has it that between 1212 and 1215, Francis of Assisi made a pilgrimage to this mountain and met a charcoal burner named Cotolay, who guided him to the summit and offered him hospitality. According to the divine vision, St. Francis asked him to build a Franciscan convent in Santiago, which gave rise to the current Convent of St. Francis in the city.

At the top of Monte Pedroso there are also several petroglyphs, samples of rock art in the area. These offer a fascinating insight into the history of the region.

Although the top of the mountain is occupied by communication antennas and television repeaters, it is still a place frequented by locals and visitors to watch the fireworks that light up the sky on the day of the Apostle, the main feast of the city.

Monte Pedroso is much more than a geographical elevation in Santiago de Compostela. It is an emblematic viewpoint that offers one of the best views of the Galician capital, a connection with the history and spirituality of the area, and an opportunity to appreciate the natural and cultural beauty of this region.
