The
Monte da Almáciga Park
was inaugurated in the 1990s, specifically in 1992, together with a sculpture by Silveiro Rivas.
The promotion of this green area, located in the vicinity of Concheiros, Almáciga and the Espírito Santo neighborhood, arose in parallel to urban development and the increase in housing and buildings in the area.
The old Monte da Almáciga is a symbol of Galician history, hosting in 1469 the Battle of Almáciga, a key confrontation in the Great Irmandiño War that led to the defeat of the Irmandiño army by the group led by Archbishop Fonseca.
Throughout time, the space that make up these mountains was dedicated to various uses, from common pasture, to the exploitation of oak trees for the use of wood and the manufacture of firewood.
The land was crossed by several roads that gave rise to the streets of Touro, Teo and Arzúa and, at the beginning, the neighborhood was hardly inhabited, since most of the neighbors lived in A Pastoriza.
However, the area experienced progressive residential growth, which led to the design of this green area located on the western slope of Monte da Almáciga.
The park covers an area of more than 37,000 square meters and is connected to both the urban center and the surrounding land and mountains, mainly dedicated to farming and grazing.
In addition, this site has been consolidated as a leisure space for the neighbors, especially for walking and sports.
In fact, it offers numerous grassy areas covered with lush vegetation, a pond, rest areas with benches, pedestrian paths, gazebos and urban vegetable gardens.
The open design of this space respects the topography of the land and takes advantage of its natural elements, in addition to having abundant plant and tree species, such as oak and birch trees.
