The
Museum of the Casa de la Troya
is a unique site in the whole territory that is located in the historic center of the city of Compostela, very close to the Cathedral of Santiago.
The uniqueness of the initiative lies in its proposal: it is a building that recreates a student boarding house and university life in Santiago at the end of the 19th century.
This atmosphere was immortalized by Alejandro Pérez Lugín in the novel ‘La Casa de la Troya’, published in 1915 and one of the most widely read works of Spanish literature.
The text was awarded the Fastenrath Prize of the Royal Spanish Academy and was a sales success, since it reached a hundred editions in a few years. Through this work, the author recounts and condenses his memories of his student experiences during his years of residence in Santiago de Compostela.
Thus, the museum represents a faithful portrait of the boarding house described in the novel and managed by ‘Doña Generosa’. The building, originally from the 18th century, has a decoration very representative of the period. In fact, the original house was completely emptied to try to recreate the atmosphere and the layout of the apartments in a way that is faithful to the period in which the novel takes place.
The House-Museum, as we know it, opened its doors on February 27, 1993, driven by the figure of Benigno Amor Rodríguez, the main promoter of the proposal. It is structured in three floors and an attic, although from the entrance it is divided into two very different areas: the house and the stables.
Among its rooms, the so-called ‘respect room’ stands out, with mementos of the author of the novel, or the dining room, where numerous images and objects related to the characters of Pérez Lugín’s work are exhibited. The complex is completed with the bedrooms on the second floor, the attic with the kitchen and the master bedroom.
