Curtocircuíto celebrates 20 years of cinematographic innovation in Compostela

3 Aug 2023 | Culture, Leisure

The International Film Festival Curtocircuíto returns to Santiago de Compostela celebrating its 20th anniversary, consolidating its position as one of the longest-running festivals in Galicia. From October 3 to 8, the capital will be the epicenter of cinematography with screenings, shows, meetings and a renewed image.

The festival began in 2003, when it was called “Cortos na rúa”, an independent initiative that sought to bring cinema to the streets of Santiago. In 2004 it adopted its current name, Curtocircuíto, and the City Council of Santiago de Compostela became the main promoter of the event.

Since then, the festival has been a timeless mix of modern and classic, ready to continue evolving in the future, but always supporting Galician and international independent cinema.

An edition full of novelties

The new issue of Curtocircuíto comes with two new features. The first is the introduction of the Cosmos section, which will concentrate films that were previously in other sections. Its aim is to break down the barriers of genre and territorial origin, allowing films to dialogue without limits.

This new stage seeks to create a space where the most daring narrative cinema coexists directly with avant-garde proposals, promoting cultural diversity and reflection on current issues.

In addition, the event also renews its commitment to Galician cinema through sections such as Planeta GZ, Supernova or Terra, which aim to be a meeting point for the community’s talent.

The second novelty is that Curtocircuíto is back with a new visual identity. This renewal reflects its commitment to art and constant exploration. The new image, designed by eenyakee (Iñaki López), in collaboration with the festival management, is a timeless blend of modern and classic, ready to move forward into the future.

Another of the special actions that the event has carried out to celebrate its 20th anniversary is to recover its channel on Filmin. There, they will present a special program consisting of a selection of 20 pieces, made up of the best short films of the last two decades.

A festival with a long history

The last 20 years of Curtocircuíto have witnessed the presence of iconic figures of the world film industry. Names such as Aki Kaurismäki, Abel Ferrara, Ulrich Seidl and Pedro Costa have left their mark on the festival, sharing their unique vision of cinema with attendees. In addition, it has been a space of convergence for diverse artistic fields, including contemporary photography and experimental music.

The festival venues are much more than spaces, they are the heart of the experience. The Teatro Principal, the NUMAX hall and the Sala Capitol will host its screenings and contribute to give character and meaning to this special edition.

The closing ceremony of the event will take place on October 8 at the city’s Teatro Principal, where the winners of the 20th edition of Curtocircuíto will be announced.

In these days of celebration and cinematographic exploration, the festival once again demonstrates its ability to reinvent itself and adapt, remaining a beacon of creativity in the cultural panorama of Galicia.

If you are a lover of the seventh art, do not hesitate to attend this event and be part of this unique experience of cinema and art in the heart of the Galician capital.
