On May 17, the Día das Letras Galegas (Day of Galician Letters) will be celebrated, one of the most famous festivities in which an important figure in Galician literature is honored. This year is dedicated to the poet and essayist Luísa Villalta and the City Council of Santiago has prepared several activities to honor her as she deserves.
For this reason, the city council has launched the campaign ‘Andei por Santiago/pisando estrelas’, whose name is inspired by one of Villalta’s poems. Thus, it has placed several stars with this message throughout the city to encourage residents to share their favorite places on social networks.
Those who participate using the hashtags #AndeiPorSantiago and #PisandoEstrelas can win one of the 10 lots of cultural material to be raffled by the Concello.
Another important event is the public reading of an institutional declaration unanimously approved by the full council, which will take place on May 16 in the Praza do Obradoiro. It will feature the participation of writers Marga Romero and Esperanza Mariño, who will recite a selection of Luísa Villalta’s poetic work.

Many initiatives to pay tribute to the Galician language
These will not be the only activities to be held in the Galician capital. Throughout the month of May, the city council will offer several guided walks about Compostela and the origins of the Galician language.
The Teatro Principal, meanwhile, will host the show ‘Made in Galiza’, on May 16 and 17 at 8:30 pm, and the multidisciplinary recital ‘Ritos de Resistencia’, on Saturday 18 at 8:30 pm.
The Sociocultural Centers of Santiago have also been involved in the celebration with the literary creation workshop ‘Escribirmos na compañía de Luísa Villalta’, organized in collaboration with the Escuela de Asociación de Escritoras e Escritores en Lingua Galega (AELG) and supported by the Diputación de A Coruña. It began on April 20 and will continue on May 25 and June 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 10:30 am to 1 pm.
